Adopt-A-Park

About Adopt-A-Park

Adopt-A-Park is a public service program for volunteers who are interested in cleaning up Burnsville's parks. It is an excellent way for citizens and organizations to make a personal contribution to the community.

Projects

Some past projects that Adopt-A-Park volunteer groups have worked on include:

  • General litter and refuse clean-up
  • Planting and maintaining trees and garden beds

Picnic Area

  • Park planters
  • Assisting the City on improvement projects

How the Program Works

Citizens, community groups, churches or businesses pick up litter for their "adopted" park. The Adopt-A-Park group agrees to a minimum three-year commitment, selects a park, and picks up litter once per month in May and September, twice a month in June through August.

The City of Burnsville will provide trash bags and safety information to use for clean-up days. Groups are responsible for picking up litter only. The City will remove filled trash bags from park entrances. Each Adopt-A-Park area will be marked by a 30" X 48" sign to recognize the organization's clean-up efforts.

Why Get Involved

Litter is unsightly - it destroys the natural aesthetics of our beautiful parks and city.

Litter is very expensive - the City hires seasonal workers to pick up litter and empty trash cans for five months during the year. Even with this effort, the city cannot keep up with the problem. Volunteers help save tax dollars and gives the group a sense of pride in their park and the community.

A litter-free community is inviting to both visitors and prospective new residents and businesses.

Through the efforts of volunteers, improvements can be made which may otherwise not have been possible.

Things to Know

The City will help the group to select a park to adopt. Participants under 18 years of age must have adequate adult supervision. Groups shall arrange pick-up dates in advance with the City of Burnsville. Work may not be allowed on or near holidays.

      Clean-Up Day Can Be Fun!

It's important to spend time planning work assignments and the amount of time that will be spent cleaning up. Here are some helpful tips to make the day efficient and fun for everyone:

      • Contact the City of Burnsville at least one week in advance to schedule a clean-up date. Arrange pick-up times for visibility vests, trash bags and receptacles.
      • Consider assigning work teams and leaders, and also distribute trash bags before you reach the park.
      • Many groups find that it is best to carpool to the site to reduce the number of vehicles parked on the street.
      • Estimate the amount of time for your clean-up session and agree on a meeting place for before and after work is done.
      • Coordinate publicity events with the City - contact Jon Nissen at 952-895-4521.
